Make it from pine and the bench evokes a rustic charm that works well in an informal setting. Use hardwood and the bench is more apt for formal homes and apartments.

In either case, its design suits all settings. The large storage compartment, hidden beneath the seat, is the perfect spot to store hats, gloves and scarves. Or, use the space for toys, games or out-of-season clothes.

The project is relatively easy to make. We made sure of that. By making the bench from pre-made shelving board, we've eliminated the need to glue boards to width.
