Well, this rocking horse project fulfils both objectives. The project is easy enough for most parents and grandparents to build, and rugged enough to last for a generation or two of the wildest of riders.

It was decided early on that the rocking horse shouldn't look too thin or spindly, so the body and the legs were made of 1-1/2-inch thick stock. This material lends the horse a natural appearance and makes the back wide enough to sit on comfortably.

After the body has been built, the project can be made to look more realistic with a few added extras - two glass eyes, ears, mane, and tail. And, don’t resist adding a leather saddle and bridle.
